Japanese Mothers

It was popular in the eighties and nineties to consider
Japanese education the best in the world.
This opinion has waned as the
realities of do-or-die exams became known to the world. But Japanese test
scores still cause envy in the educational bureaucracies of many top
industrialized nations.
One reality of Japanese educational success was seldom
discussed in the Western or European press, however: the role of mothers.
As
researcher Andrew J. Coulson summarized:
"Parental involvement is another key
to Japan's comparatively good educational performance.
"Since Japanese mothers
stay at home with their children more often than women in many other
industrialized countries, it should not be surprising that they are better able
to supervise their children's education."
