The principle of "inspiring rather than requiring" is one of
the great keys of quality education.
Force weakens learning. Inspiration is
much more powerful than force--it lasts when the teacher is gone and even when
the student is tempted by friends or entertainments.
Too often people think that "inspire, not require" means
"ignore, not require."
Nothing could be further from the truth. Sadly, our society is so focused on requirements
than when we stop forcing we wonder what else to do.
We assume that we can
either force or ignore. We can imagine no other options.
But inspiration is much more powerful than force. It also
takes a lot more work for the parent or teacher.
In what ways
can you inspire the young person so that he or she will gladly choose the right
thing and pursue it long after you are pushing them?
Take the time to really
think this through. Such inspiration is real.
