A Measure of Depth Phase

The real measure of a college or university, according to Jacques Barzun, former Provost of Columbia University, is:

1)    Study. "[I]t took so long to develop the republic of learning in which study was the sole aim and test of the institution."

2)    Thinking. "The principle here is: think tank, not assembly line."

3)    Discussing. "[T]he faculty was the university..."

4)    Learning. "The outcome to be aimed at is an institution instead of a machine, a company of scholars instead of a corporation with employees and customers."
