When to shift the blame (or credit)

"No current theory of personality can explain why both members of a pair of identical twins reared apart liked to keep rubber bands around their wrists and pretend to sneeze in crowded elevators."

~Steven Pinker, The Blank Slate: The Modern Denial of Human Nature

Parents, especially mothers, often take too much responsibility for their children's choices--even after the children become adults.

Parents certainly have a great and important role in the lives of their children, but taking too much blame (or credit) helps nothing and is often, in fact, simply unfounded.

Kids make their own choices. Do your best, give them your whole love, and enjoy letting them live their own lives.
