The Power of a Mother

Home, School and
Nation
"[A] nation is but a magnified home. Parliament and Congress
are but hearthstones on a grander scale.
"Napoleon understood well the
nature of home and its mission when he said, 'The great need of France is
mothers..'
"An old Scottish proverb says, 'An ounce of mother is worth a pound
of clergy.'
"Mohammad said, 'Paradise is at the feet of mothers.'"
-C.E.
Sargent, Our Home
"We as women who benefit from the example
of our ancient mothers and the sacrifices of our 18th to 20th century
sisters may now take the reins and define female leadership for our
generation and the generations that follow. But we must correct some of
the excesses as well as the failures of last century's narrow feminism.
"For me, a mother is any adult woman who
mentors youth, who helps them grow into contributing, happy adults.
There are as many ways to get involved as there are women, but all of us must do it. And the marital or maternal status of a woman has nothing to do with her fully participating in this mission.
"There is a power that women bring to the
table, the power of shaping a community--of changing its very heart--a
power that lasts for generations, not just between elections. This power is best expressed by the woman who sets out to raise her great grandchildren."

What is TJEd?

Every person has inner genius. Thomas
Jefferson Education consists of
helping each student discover, develop and polish his or her genius.
This is the essence and very definition of great education.
There are really only three kinds of
education, and they are best
understood from the student's perspective. Students get a good education
for one of three reasons:
- they are forced to study long, hard and effectively (the "Stick")
- they are convinced or manipulated to study long, hard and effectively (the "Carrot")
- they love to study long, hard and effectively (the "Love Affair")
If the first two are "good," the latter is truly "great."
The Stick, the Carrot, or the Love Affair: these are the three types
of education; and the love affair is by far the most effective.
