Natural Eagerness
|
|
"It is the rarest of occurrences to find a youngster who has
been infused by this education with a longing to know all about China or the
Romans or the Jews.
"All to the contrary. There is an indifference to such
things..."
How unfortunate! Education can be so exciting, so
exhilarating, so moving.
It can instill the young person with a desire to know
so much more, to be always seeking, always learning.
And yet, in the name of
"standards," "grade levels," and other types of conformity, many schools,
classrooms and parents have reduced learning to the rote, the forced, or the
mediocre.
Nearly all children are naturally inquisitive, interested,
excited about learning.
It is the unnatural methods or timing that drive away
such enthusiasm.
Great education follows a different path, by building on the
natural eagerness and interest each child is born with.
Real teaching is less
about transferring information and more about fanning the flames of inborn curiosity.

A Thomas Jefferson Education has not only helped my wife Laura
and I create a better educational environment for our children, but has
constantly reminded me that master teachers believe that each child who
walks into their classroom is a genius, waiting to be discovered.
